ADVO triumphs in Regional Higher Education Press Conference

The Westernian Advocate, Official Student Publication of University of Batangas, continued the dominance it started as it seizes various group and individual awards and nailing it to the Top Ten Performing Schools in the Regional Higher Education Press Conference (RHEPC) held at Batis Aramin Resort and Hotel, Lucban Quezon last January 16-18, 2018.

In the group contest, ADVO's Literary Folio entitled “Walwal” was awarded as sixth (6th) Best Folio after bagging first (1st) place in Best Cover Design; second (2nd) in Best Literary Content; seventh (7th) in Best Literary Concept and in Best in Visual Arts respectively.

The 'Advo Mag', ADVO's Magazine publication, was awarded fourth (4th) place overall after grabbing the sixth (6th) place in Best News Page; eighth (8th) in Best Opinion page and in Best Page Design; fifth (5th) in Best Devcomm Page; third (3rd) place in Best Feature Page; second (2nd) place in Best Literary Page and in Best Sports Page and; sixth (6th) place in Best Cover Design.

Furthermore, in the Newsletter category, the Brahman journalists snatched the fourth (4th) place overall. For Best News Page, Brahmans grabbed the sixth (6th) place and seventh (7th) place for Best in Editorial Page. The newsletter, on the other hand, raked the first (1st) place in Best Page Design while it also captured the fourth (4th) place in the Best Devcomm Page, Best Sports Page and in Best Feature-Literary Page.

ADVO’s student-journalists did not also let themselves be left behind in the individual contests. Joyce Kathleen Lumbres clutched the seventh (7th) place in News Writing (Filipino); Gaille Sabrina Par meanwhile grabbed the ninth (9th) place in Editorial Writing (English) and seventh (7th) place in Sports Writing (English). For Editorial Writing (Filipino), Emmanuel Maala made it to the sixth (6th) place and Aidon De Jesus placed ninth (9th) in Sports Writing (Filipino).

Moreover, Psalm Robredillo captured the seventh (7th) place in Column Writing (Filipino) while Allen Estrada placed second (2nd) in Poetry Writing (English). Ian Gabriel Culla landed on the fourth (4th) place in Comic Strip Drawing (English) while Jan Viper Menes placed sixth (6th) in Graphic Illustration (English). Kenneth Landicho grabbed the ninth (9th) place in Graphic Illustration (English) and fifth (5th) place in Editorial Cartooning (English) while Daniel Angelo Gaviola placed sixth (6th) in Layouting. In a special contest held for Editorial Writing, our very own Mark Lester Marasigan nailed it to the third (3rd) place.

This year’s Regional Higher Education Press Conference featured 25 colleges and universities all over the region.

“I am certainly proud for ADVO because they exemplified their talents in all fields of journalism. The theme of the press conference, which is about averting fake news, was very timely as the event itself became the ground for practicing ethical journalism among student journalists,” shared Mr. Rommel Acosta, one of the Advisers of The Westernian Advocate.
